Free education up to year 10.

The prime minster Charlot Salwai confirmed from next year there would be free early education as well as secondary education for students from year seven to year 10, reported by Radio New Zealand yesterday.

Mr Salwai’s announcement coincided with Children’s Day, which was marked in Vanuatu, as thousands of children marched through Port Vila, while parents took part in special programmes one of shich included providing meals for children in every home.

In Vanuatu, Children’s Day is celebrated to ‘Stop violence against children’ and ‘Give a child the chance to express their opinion today.’

After the march there are speeches and activities organized by schools, including a dance. Then, after midday, children return home to spend time with their parents for the rest of the day

Churches also called on parents to honour their children on Children’s Day.

Last year, also on Children’s Day, the government made the same announcement – of free schooling to year ten – but it did not give a start date.
