Vanuatu MP loses Parliament Seat

A Vanuatu member of Parliament has lost his seat after missing 3 Parliament sessions consecutively.

The Speaker of Parliament announced that the seat for Malekula MP Gratien Shedrack is officially vacant after the MP without notice broke parliamentary Standing Orders.

The now-former MP is asked to return all Government property and also vacate the Parliament premises.

Mr. Shedrack has now become one of many MPs in Vanuatu to lose his seat following failure to attend sittings.

In 1987 the entire opposition bloc consisting of 18 MPs lost their seats for failing to attend 3 consecutive Parliament sittings.
