Vanuatu’s higher earners likely to pay income tax

Parliament resumes in Vanuatu on Thursday and the Salwai Government’s proposal to introduce income tax will be back on the agenda after months of public consultations.

The government is keen to impose the tax on those earning what is described as a reasonable wage, while also bringing in a new tax on business.

It’s estimated the move would bring in an extra 600 million vatu of government revenue, but as Brenda Daniel reports from Port Vila, the claim that it would be unpatriotic of anyone to oppose the plan is not finding favour with the Vanuatu people.
